Dan O'Brien
Estate Director

A Rhode Island native, Dan has been in the wine industry for over 15 years. While pursing a degree in Management Information Systems at the University of Rhode Island, Dan started his career in wine while attending college managing the wine inventories for top Providence restaurants.

After college, Dan spent 2 1⁄2 years as the lead sommelier at Grill 23 & Bar in Boston’s Back Bay followed by 2 more years as the wine director at Excelsior, an upscale, new American restaurant across from the Boston Public Garden.

In 2008, Dan moved his career to the Bay San Francisco Bay Area as the Wine & Spirits Director for Passport Resorts Cavallo Point and it’s restaurant Murray Circle in Sausalito California. An eco-luxury lodge, built into the old Fort Baker, directly underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. Dan was given the task of designing, building and sourcing a 12,000-bottle wine cellar as well as authoring an opening wine list of over 2500 different selections. Under Dan’s tenure Murray Circle received a 1 Michelin Star rating 3 years in a row and was invited to host a dinner at the James Beard House in New York.

Dan’s focus has always been on small domestic and European producers that are family owned and mindful of sustainable farming practices. In addition to having a strong grasp of the Napa Valley and it’s producers, his travels have taken him to the wine producing regions of Germany, Italy and Austria.

Dan has been featured in and garnered awards from Wine Spectator, Food & Wine Magazine, Wine & Spirits and Wine Enthusiast. Dan has also been featured in the Boston Globe, The New York Times, and San Francisco Chronicle, among others.
