Long Meadow Ranch Winery Releases Its
1999 Vintage Cabernet Sauvignon
October, 2002, Napa Valley, CA
Napa Valley's innovative Long Meadow Ranch Winery has announced the release of its mountain estate-grown 1999 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
This is a very special wine ideal for drinking now and for laying away. The fruit for the 1999 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was crushed October 5-7, 1999, by winemaker, Cathy Corison, at Long Meadow Ranch's AIA-award winning winery facility. This complex wine exhibits the distinctive natural flavors produced by Long Meadow Ranch's 1100 foot high Bear Canyon Vineyard atop the Mayacamas Mountains. Blackberry and chocolate-covered cherry aromas, distinctive black and red fruit flavors suggestive of cherries and plums, and an exceedingly long finish characterize the 1999 vintage.
Excellent reviews have already come in from Wine Spectator (92) and Wine Enthusiast (91), and the New York Times.
Wine Spectator says, "firm, dark and intense, with compact currant, pencil lead, earth, leather and cedar flavors that clamp down tightly on the finish, where gripping tannins take hold."
New York Times Online says, "surpasses the quality of many so-called cults. . . seduces you with smoothness, elegance and class."
"This fourth vintage from the Long Meadow Ranch vineyard confirms that the wine reflects a truly distinctive terroir," said winemaker Corison. "Fruity, and with tart balance, the wine is viscous and thick, almost unctuous. The tannins are fully ripe and the deep red color makes this a beautiful wine in the glass and the exceedingly long finish allows you to savor its flavors." Aged for 26 months in 100 percent French Oak from cooper Seguin Moreau with a touch of estate-grown Cabernet Franc (3 percent) adding additional complexity, the wine seamlessly integrates oak and fruit. The handcrafted balance and pleasantly moderate alcohol level (13.3 percent) make the 1999 Cabernet a perfect complement to food. This is a very special wine ideal for drinking now and for laying away.
Long Meadow Ranch is rapidly gaining recognition among the elite producers of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon even though this is only their fourth release. Long Meadow Ranch's distinctive wine is already enjoying worldwide placement in a long list of awarding-winning restaurant cellars, including Gidleigh Park Hotel, Le Caprice and The Ivy in England; Four Seasons, Lespinasse, Restaurant Daniel, and Montrachet in New York; Renaissance in Aspen; Boulevard, Rubicon, Jardiniere, and Gary Danko in San Francisco; Eccho, Tru and Charlie Trotter's in Chicago; and New York Grill, Tableaux and Kitano Garden in Tokyo.
Long Meadow Ranch is also enjoying the success of its LMR Corral Club, established in 2001. This innovative consumer partnership offers special invitations for members-only events at the Ranch, the opportunity to purchase limited production, library and large-format bottlings, plus the option to buy pre-release wines, Long Meadow Ranch's premium Prato Lungo and Napa Valley Select olive oils, and its soon-to-be released LMR Highland Beef.
Long Meadow Ranch has pioneered a distinctive approach to farming in the Napa Valley. With its motto, "Excellence through Responsible Farming," owners Ted and Laddie Hall have created an integrated, organic farming system that does not rely on the prevailing monocul-ture of grapes. "I truly believe that world class red wine can be made using simple, sustain-able farming methods," said Ted Hall. "But, we are not only producing red wine that can be proudly poured with the world's best, we are also producing olive oil, specialty beef, and organic vegetables in a highly responsible, economically viable fashion. Our wine reflects our philosophy of balance and our deep respect for the land."
