2021 PINOT NOIR, PINOLE

ANDERSON VALLEY ESTATE

“Medium-deep ruby in color. A lovely nose – very charming, classy and distinguished, with pennyroyal flower, fresh forest strawberry and violet flowers. The wine is dense, elegant and racy on the palate, with textural refinement, silky mouthfeel and an everlasting finish. The return of strawberry and violet flavors with note of vanilla add to its complexity. The 2021 Pinole will age gracefully for years to come and would be helped by a simple decanting in its first 5 years of life.” – Stéphane Vivier

95 Points, James Suckling

“Black-fruited and perfumed with aromas of black cherries, blackberry bush, sweet spice and a lovely herbal undertone. The palate is finely constructed with finely tuned though firm tannins and bright acidity, leading into a fruit-driven finish with plenty of varietal nuance from clones 828 and Calera. Drinking beautifully now with plenty of aging time left. Drink or hold.” – Ryan Montgomery

96 Points, Decanter

“The Pinole comes from a block with morning light exposure and greater vigor on volcanic and iron-loam soils. Aged 21 months in 31% new French oak with 15% whole-cluster inclusion, this is a rich, creamy Pinot Noir with an underlying ironstone mineral character, showing darker fruit flavours and a freshness imparted by the Calera clone, alongside the generosity of clones 777 and 828. Dark-berry fruit and spice carry the day, with a dark forest character that feels both refreshing and energizing.” – Jonathan Cristaldi

GROWING SEASON

2021 will be remembered as an extreme vintage and certainly considered as one of the best of recent memories. Pronounced drought conditions resulting in lower yields were combined with mild Spring and Summer conditions. It allowed the fruit to ripened slowly and the dry weather provided unique concentration of aromas and flavors, all the while keeping the acidities high. Perfectly balanced the wines are a true glimpse of this unique vintage, concentrated and lively at the same time.
