2017 PINOT NOIR, PERRYGULCH

ANDERSON VALLEY ESTATE

“Attractive and perfumed on the nose with an earthy and floral bouquet. Initially dense but also supple and smooth. Floral aromas return on the palate with hints of black cherry, sweet spice, and earth. The fresh mineral texture shows an elegant finesse and a nuanced, long finish. Enjoy now or cellar for at least another 15 years.”  – Stéphane Vivier

93 Points, Wine & Spirits

This Pinot Noir comes mostly from vines planted in 1996 and 2000. It feels healthy and fresh, as tight as a rosebud when it’s just about to burst. There’s a sunny warmth to the wine’s tart pomegranate flavors, and though oak diminishes some of the fruit expression now (25 percent of the barrels were new), the delicacy and spring-water clarity of the flavors suggests unfettered development ahead.” – Joshua Greene

95 Points, Decanter

“An appealing wine showing mature notes of game and leather alongside stewed plum, expressive mulberry, and cherry. Rounded mid-palate, weighty, with retaining freshness and ripe tannins.”

GROWING SEASON

The season started wet with record-breaking rain from November through April. A mild early spring and bud break in March was the recipe for a wild spring and summer as our team worked hard to finish soil work and keep up with the vines fast growth. Mild summer temperatures provided a breather with colder weather and foggy conditions in late August, bringing a welcomed and slow ripening at the end of the ripening cycle.

ANDERSON VALLEY ESTATE – SOIL SERIES

We grow the fruit for Long Meadow Ranch Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays among the rolling, mineral-rich slopes of Mendocino County’s Anderson Valley. Nestled against the banks of the Navarro River and dense groves of Coast Redwoods, our vineyards benefit from some of California’s best conditions for Burgundian grape varieties. But perhaps our favorite aspect of our vineyards is the diversity in soil types, and the opportunity it has presented to showcase many different faces of these wines we love.

FELIZ, CHARDONNAY
In the part of the vineyard flanked on one side by the Navarro River, lives our Chardonnay. Feliz is a fine loam that is well-draining and the darkest in color of the estate’s three dominant soil types. Chardonnay grown in Feliz loam tends to express a fresh vibrancy in the glass as well as a minerality that we love in our white wines.
PINOLE, PINOT NOIR
Our Pinole block has slopes that vary between 2-15%. Pinole loam is very fine, with a lot of well-draining sand and clay in which Pinot Noir vines flourish. Wine made from Pinole tends to have elegance and finesse, they are low in alcohol and high in acidity.
PERRYGULCH, PINOT NOIR

Perrygulch loam is the most dramatically sloped region of our Anderson Valley vineyards varying from 20-35%. The clay volumes are the highest here, while the pH is the lowest. The vigor is higher which tends to produce a higher concentration of flavors in the finished wines. Pinot Noir grown in the Perrygulch loam tends to produce powerful, concentrated and structured wines.
